Sustainable Healthy Living, by Sheila Mullen – March 10. 2012
I recently watched for a second time the Robert Kenner Film, Food, Inc.  It is a legendary documentary peeling back the layers of illusion shrouding the simple question, “Where does our food come from?”
The best description of the movie is a quote from the beginning of the movie: “Food has become much more dangerous in ways that are being deliberately hidden from us.  You have a small group of people who control the entire food system, from seed to the supermarket.  It is not just our health that is at risk; companies don’t want farmers talking, and the corporations don’t want this story told.“
I am in no way an alarmist, but someone who actively encourages all of us to educate ourselves and participate by voting with our dollars for the food that ensures the greater Charlotte/Gaston regions have good healthy local food to nourish our communities and help our local food economy grow.
If you haven’t seen the movie, buy a oopy or request it from your local library.  Make a party out of watching it and invite your family, friends and neighbors over.  The discussions will be fascinating.
The parting words of "Food, Inc." bear repeating and hopefully will inspire you to take action in your own way:
  • You can vote to change the (food) system - Three times a day
  • Buy from companies that treat workers, animals, and the environment with respect.
  • When you go to the supermarket, choose the foods that are in season
  • Buy foods that are organic. Know what’s in your food. Read labels
  • The average meal travels 1,500 miles from the farm to the supermarket. Buy foods that are locally grown
  • Shop at farmer’s markets
  • Plant a garden
  • Cook a meal with your family and eat together.
  • Everyone has the right to healthy food.  Make sure your farmer’s markets take food stamps
  • Ask your school board to provide healthy school lunches
  • The FDA and USDA are supposed to protect you and your family. Tell Congress to enforce food safety standards and re-introduce Kevin’s Law
  • If you say grace, ask for food that will keep us, and the planet healthy
  • You can change the world with every bite
Abraham Lincoln believed in the power of the people when he stated in the Gettysburg Address, “… of the people, by the people and for the people…”  It is our right to know where our food comes from and we CAN make a difference.  How are you making a difference in building our local food economy and community?
